LearnZillion, the DC-based developer of a web-based platform that features videos of 3-5 minute math and literacy lessons taught by teachers from around the country, said on Thursday it has raised $2.4 million in its first round of funding.
Investors included DC Community Ventures (DCCV), O’Reilly Alpha Tech Ventures, Learn Capital Venture Partners, NewSchools Venture Fund, Citybridge Foundation, ULU Ventures and Calvert Social Investment Fund.
Company co-founders Eric Westendorf and Alix Guerrier launched LearnZillion at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in DC with the idea of allowing the school’s teachers to post lessons that students and parents could access online. The idea has since expanded to include teachers from across the country, with students able to access playlists of lessons that meet their specific needs.
The platform also includes assessment and analytics tools designed to track student progress. The service is now being used in over 20 district and charter schools in DC.
