10 Strategies & Apps to Manage the iPad Classroom

While considering The Rock Hill (SC) Climb to Challenge-Based Work, several questions were posed about managing the iPad classroom. I gave an inadequate answer but vowed to do some homework. With a little help from some great teacher bloggers, following are 10 strategies and apps to manage the iPad classroom.

1. Amada Seewald said “let´s start with the idea of using instructional strategies that are fun, interesting, and incite inquiry.”

2. Richard Wells said “If you mean ‘control’, I’ve always stayed clear as encouraging digital citizenship is easier.” (Check out Richard’s site, iPad4schools.) One way to teach digital citizenship is EasyTech from Learning.com. Common Sense Media has an extensive library on the topic.

3. Wells added, “A knowledgeable technician friend of mine uses Casper in his school very effectively.” Casper Focus claims that it can “Ensure that all students are engaged, on the same activity, and using their devices in the ways the technology was intended.”

4. Answer Pad and Socrative are student response systems that monitor progress and elicit engagement.

5. Gobstopper and Subtext are web apps that lets teachers manage iPad reading for secondary students.

6. Class Dojo is a popular web app for classroom management. Teachers can use this app to give their students positive behavior feedback and manage their classes, while parents can check on their child’s progress at school.

7. Teacher’s Assistant Pro is an Apple app for classroom management.

8. LiveSlide from Atlas Learning, captures every teachable moment in a simple, adaptive, secure way. A device agnostic way for you to share, annotate, and quiz students with as little or as much control as you want.

9. MobileIron provides mobile security and privacy controls for schools.

10. LightSpeed provides mobile device management, filter and learning management.
