Seaford Senior High is located in rural Seaford, Delaware, population 7,000. Once the pride of lower Delaware, Seaford was home to a booming DuPont manufacturing facility, and was known as the Nylon Capital of the World.
In its heyday, the plant employed some 5,000 community members, many of whom were designers and scientists who developed revolutionary materials and products still widely used today. However, about 15 years ago, the number of employees at the plant started to dwindle, and eventually the plant closed its doors altogether.
The mass exodus of quality jobs caused the town’s demographics to transform. The percentage of its students who come from low income families grew from 51 percent in 2004 to about 77 percent, today.
Just like leaders in so many school districts with similar stories across the nation, Seaford educators knew things needed to change. They knew it was time to transform the system to better meet the needs of their changing demographic, while still maintaining a high expectation of academic rigor and student success.
Find out how Seaford’s leaders built what they call a “pipeline of success” for students by reading their story here.
