Easy-to-Use Guide: The Instruction and Technology Integration Model

In order to meet the needs of all students–and to equip teachers with a consistent process to do so–Superintendent Dr. Philip Hickman created a new instructional model. The K-16 Instruction and Technology Integration Model, or “K-16 ITI” is transforming teaching and personalizing learning for students in Mississippi and beyond.

We teamed up with Dr. Hickman to design an easy-to-use guide so that educators across the country can benefit from this model.

Shortly after arriving to serve as superintendent of the Columbus Municipal School District (Columbus City, Mississippi), Dr. Hickman encouraged teachers to begin implementing this innovative and blended instructional model that recognizes the important role of the teacher, personalizes instruction and leverages technology in the right ways at the right time.

This district serves around 4,500 mostly low-income students, and in the short time Dr. Hickman has been the superintendent, it has seen tremendous and successful changes, such as a district-wide shift away from textbooks to open educational resources and a push to secure devices for student use.

Designed to meet the individual needs of every student, this model is described by Dr. Hickman as helping achieve his vision for the district and for others: to help students build the skills necessary to compete in a global society.

The model outlines four different phases of the teaching and learning process, through which students gradually gain independence: I do, we do, they do, you do. The phases mark the progression in the student learning experience from direct teacher instruction to independent student work.

These phases also provide a framework for “entry points” into instruction that will be customized based on students’ level of understanding on any given topic. Teachers plan for instruction based on what they know about student mastery, then deliver instruction, and constantly monitor, adjust and assess.

By creating a vision, a framework and now this guide for teachers in Columbus City and beyond, Dr. Hickman creates learning opportunities that authentically engage students and allow them to contribute as global citizens.
