Truckloads of iPads are showing up at schools with no content, no management tools, and no plan. Finally, there is a rational and affordable bundle of software and services built for for schools.
Amplify is hoping to build on the tablet momentum with an interactive affordable bundle on a 10 inch Asus. The Amplify Tablet is pre-loaded with engaging Common Core aligned content including CK12 and Khan Academy. Search is powered by Gooru. The open platform easily integrates local content.
“It’s a complete learning solution organized around the school day,” said Stephen Smyth, President of Amplify’s Access division. “We believe it’s both more affordable and more impactful than just about any other product in the education technology market.”
The Homescreen can be customized with Notebooks representing each class. Each Notebook contains the relevant content, communications and applications for a given class. The bundle targets middle schools.
The tablet is priced at $299 for the device when purchased with $99 software and support subscription. With an AT&T 4G data plan, the tablet is $349 for the device when purchased with a 2year subscription at $179 per year. A keyboard and stand are extra.
Teachers can send, track and review assignments all on their tablets. A Playlist Builder allows them to customize a sequence of learning experiences. Teachers can manage threaded discussions. Students can quickly note their level of understanding with a mood check.
One edupreneur (launching her third high school this fall) said about her demo, “The platform was impressive; the science curriculum and the level of interactivity was amazing.”
Math Maps look like a promising approach to independent mastery-based learning for grades 4-8. (It would be cool to see a full set of K-12 maps and badges.)
Teachers will appreciate analytics, mobile device management, and customer support. Teachers can monitor what app each student is using and flash “Eyes on Teacher” to every screen with the touch of a button. The battery should last a full school day.
Amplify will sell implementation support and professional development services to support deployments.
