Take the Bio-Bus to the Future to Learn About Recycled Fuels

Learning Videos / by

Chemistry teacher Tray Sleeper at Merrimack High School in Merrimack, NH published “Bio-Bus to the Future,” a SchoolTube video demonstrating how to create fuel from recycled fry grease in a parody that plays off of the hit 1980′s film “Back to the Future.”

Sleeper’s colleague travels to the future to find that there’s a major gasoline shortage and increase of pollution, creating a future demand for recycled fuel. So Sleeper, or “Doc,” shows us how to transform used oil by combining methanol and potassium hydroxide, heating the combination up, and filtering it in a series of wash and dry tanks.

This video would be a great introduction to a chemistry course on fuels to engage students in textbook learning, getting them excited about the subject matter and how it affects our daily lives. Enjoy the video below!
